Meerut is an large and prosperous city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It has a population of almost 1.2 million people.

The city is historically important because it was the birth place of the Indian revolution against British rule, but it is also becoming an economic center for the surrounding area.

Meerut has seen a boom in the construction business as this city now has many buildings, shopping complexes and apartments. Meerut is the largest supplier of sports goods and also the largest manufacturer of musical instruments in India.

Meerut is also a major educational center for Northwest India. People from the entire country and from all over the world come here in order to continue their studies and earn their degrees.

Meerut district is found between Ganga and Jamuna, and has been a center of lots of activities in the history of India. It was the fertility of the soil, temperate climate and its proximity to Delhi that has helped in the progress of Meerut during times of peace and political commotions.

Meerut has a history of inhabitation by Tyagis, Vaishyas, Rajputs, Jats, and Gujjars who have helped in the progress of Meerut through agricultural skill, sweat and enterprise. It was under the control of ‘Company’s Government’ that Meerut district assumed its present geographical features in 1836. Meerut is associated with the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the British East India Company where the first chants of ‘Dilli Chalo’ were raised.

The cantonment in Meerut is the place where the rebellion started with Hindu and Muslim soldiers being handed over rifle cartridges with animal fat coatings. As the bullet wrappings had to be opened by mouth before use, it hurt the religious feelings of both Muslims and Hindus as these coatings were of pork and beef.

It was on 24 April, 1857 when eighty five troopers of ninety of the third cavalry in Meerut refused to touch these cartridges, and sentenced to ten years imprisonment that Meerut leapt into international prominence. This move suggested a movement freedom from the British. The famous controversial case, Meerut Conspiracy Case of 1929 is another reason for the fame of Meerut in Indian history.

It was in Meerut that the Arya Samaj Movement gained popularity by starting the publications of newspapers and magazines, the opening of schools and the emphasis on the anti-touchability campaigns; Swadeshi and Swaraj. These teachings of Arya Samaj mainly attracted middle class and caste people of Meerut.

In addition to all this, there has been rapid progress in the latest modern technological lines in Meerut. With modern education and the latest technology, Meerut is now one of the most important business centers of Western U.P. Today there are factories, schools, colleges, management institutes, medical colleges and a huge pharmaceutical market for Meerut to be proud of.
