Branch Profile of Meerut Branch of CIRC

Meerut Branch of Central India Regional Council was legally set-up through Institute's notification no. 28-RC(4)/14/86 dated 12th May, 1986 to take effect from retrospective date of 21st December, 1985.

The Branch was formally inaugurated by Shri P. A. NAIR of Bombay the then President of the Institute, on 11th day of September, 1986. The inaugural function was well attended by of Shri R. Balakrishnan from Bangalore, the then Vice-President of the Institute, Shri R. L. Chopra, the Secretary of the Institute, Shri Digambar Chaudhary the then Chairman of Central India Regional Council, Shri K. Kalyanaraman, Secretary, Examination Committee of the Institute, Dr. R. C. Vaish, a senior member of the Central Council of the Institute. The function was also graced by the presence of Senior Members, representative from the trade & Industry and officials from the Department of Income-Tax as well. The total strength of the members of Meerut Branch in the first year was only 46.

Though the Branch was formally inaugurated on 11th September, 1986, it was informally functioning in the form of an Association of Chartered Accountants at Meerut since 1976 which was regularly holding group discussions on professional interest beside family fellowhip meets.

However, the presence of CA's in Meerut is as old as the history of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India itself since 1949. City of Meerut had an opportunity of seeing senior Chartered Accountants namely Late Shri Roop Ram Gupta Ji, Shri N. C. Jain Ji and Shri A. K. Jain Ji, who were members of the Institute since its initial years of inception.

Shri Roop Ram Gupta Ji was a top luminary of the profession having well accredited academic standing. He was a renowned author of number of books on the subjects of Income Tax, Wealth Tax, Gift Tax, Estate Duty, Auditing and Accounting. His book under the title "Theory & Practice of Income Tax" was widely accepted book on the subject throughout the country and was read and referred not only by the professional students but also professionals in practice and officials of the Department of Income Tax. It was my proud privilege of doing my articleship under him from 07th July, 1972 for complete three years.

Students pursuing the course of CA at Meerut are also always very active and participative in professional activities. First coaching classes for CA examination were held in Meerut in 1973 for the examinations to be held in November, 1973, which were financially & technically sponsored by the Institute Headquarters at Delhi and the said classes were inaugurated on 5th September, 1973 by Shri T. S. Grewal Ji, the founder & long time Director of the Board of Studies of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

In furtherance of the professional activities, Chartered Accountant's examination center was also setup in Meerut since for the examinations of May, 1987 after a loudable efforts of Amresh Vashisht the then President of CA Student Association.

Presently, the branch has more than 400 members and almost more than 1200 students appear in various levels in each CA examinations.

The Member Chartered Accountants at Meerut are having very cordial relations amongst them with high mutual professional understanding & regards for each other and therefore there is hardly any case of professional dispute or misunderstanding on record.

With all this I present the history of profession of Chartered Accountancy at Meerut. I am greatly pleased to see the sincere efforts put in by the young Chartered Accountants for all round development of the profession in Meerut.

With all the best wishes and professional regards.
